Being on the Youth Leadership Council (YLC) is more than just a title; it’s a commitment to embodying the voice of the younger generation and driving positive change within our community. As a member of the YLC individuals play a pivotal role in shaping policies, programs, and initiatives that directly impact young people’s lives. It means being a proactive advocate for youth issues, actively listening to the concerns and perspectives of our peers, and fearlessly voicing our opinions to effect meaningful change. It entails collaborating with fellow council members, the Climate Roots Board of Directors, community leaders, and stakeholders to develop innovative solutions and strategies that address the challenges faced by young people today. Being on the YLC is a privilege and a responsibility—a platform to empower and inspire others, to amplify the voices of the unheard, and to leave a lasting impact that transcends generations.
Age and Term Criteria
To be eligible for the YLC, candidates must be enrolled in high school (junior or senior) or undergraduate/community college. Each elected individual serves 1 year term (from time of election) and is limited to 2 consecutive terms in any given position.
Commitment
- Attend monthly YLC meetings
- Participate actively in council discussions and decision-making processes
- Commit to a minimum term of one year of dedicated service
- Engage in board-related activities, such as events, projects, and outreach efforts
- Fulfill position-specific duties such as maintaining food gardens, building greenhouses, engaging student communities, etc.
Positions and Responsibilities
- Chairman: serves as the leader of the YLC, overseeing meetings, setting agendas, and providing strategic input for the organization. They act as the primary liaison between the YLC and the rest of the organization, ensuring that goals are met and youth voices are represented.
- Vice Chairman: supports the Chairman in their duties and assumes leadership responsibilities in their absence. They collaborate closely with the Chairman to implement council decisions, coordinate council activities, and maintain cohesion among council members.
- Treasurer: responsible for assisting in fundraising alongside the Board of Directors and the Executive Leadership Team.
- Secretary: maintains accurate records of council meetings, including minutes, attendance, and official correspondence. They manage communication among council members, distribute meeting agendas and materials, and assist with administrative tasks as needed.
- Council Members: There are 4 council members each bringing unique skills, expertise, and perspectives to the YLC. Each council member will be responsible for one key growth area (advocacy and outreach, program development, recruitment, competition management). Council members actively participate in discussions, provide input on strategic decisions, and contribute to the organization’s overall growth and success.
